It’s Only Apropos

It’s Only Apropos

If you’re really a new Linux user, you’re probably drenched in sweat at the GnomeTWEAK. Or face down at your desk. Remember – no pain, no gain 🙂 I’ll go easy on you with the GnomeCORE and let you catch your breath with a one word command that can tell exactly the program you’re looking for.

Let’s say you’re looking for a program that does something. You know what that something is. But you don’t remember what the program is called. The apropos command can point you to that program.

    apropos console

This command executes the apropos program, taking the keyword console as an argument. It runs off through your system, gathering all the executable programs that have the word console in their unique one-line description. What you get back is:

console(4)– console terminal and virtual consoles
gpm(1)– a cut and paste utility and mouse server for virtual consoles

It’s everything you needed to know to launch that mysterious program.
