Friday, we peeked into the site of John Draper, aka the notorious original hacker Cap’n Crunch. Today, we’ll look into the very small and uneventful beginnings of Linux, via the original postings of Linus Torvalds to the comp.os.minix newsgroups. This page clips together various posts to that newsgroup, all narrated by Linus himself. As an indication of how Linus perceived this pre-fledgling OS, one post comments that his creation is, ” … just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu … ” Only ten years on, it’s hard to believe that these postings would have the feel of a significant archaeological dig. But, they do.
