Creating Your Own Keyboard Shortcuts

If you like to customize Windows for your specific needs and preferences, here is another way you can do just that. Some of us prefer to use the keyboard instead of a mouse and Windows has numerous keyboard shortcuts that can be used in place of mouse clicks. You may not know this, but you can also create your own customized keystrokes to launch shortcuts on your desktop. For example, if you have a shortcut to Outlook on your desktop you can assign a keystroke to the shortcut, such as CTRL + ALT + 9.

If you choose to customize keyboard shortcuts, there are two things to keep in mind. First of all, they can only be created for shortcuts that already exist on your desktop. Second, you must include two of the following keystrokes: CTRL, ALT, and SHIFT. So with these points in mind, here is what you have to do.

  1. Right click the shortcut on your desktop.
  2. Make sure the Shortcut tab is active.
  3. Press the keystrokes you want to assign to the shortcut.
  4. If you press any letter or number, Windows automatically puts in CTRL + ALT.
  5. Click OK.

Now you can use the custom keystrokes to launch the program.
