Champions League Final

If I told you that a game as big as the Superbowl will be played Wednesday, would you think I was nuts? Well … there is and yeah, I am … for this is the day of this year’s Champions League final … an epic showdown between Liverpool and A.C. Milan. The game will be televised live at 2:30 EST on ESPN2, 6:30 pm GMT on ESPN Atlantic and ESPN Pacific Rim. Can’t program the Tivo (or catch it live)? You can always keep up on the action over the Web …

Check into ESPN’s online Gamecast for their virtual match tracker, complete with live commentary and match stats.

Prior to the immense popularity of satellite TV, soccer coverage in the states had been inadequate at best. While ESPN has provided limited Champions League coverage this season, you’ll find a virtual cornicopia of international soccer action on the Fox Soccer Channel (formerly Fox Sports World) the refreshingly bilingual GolTV, and the recently added Setanta Sports network. (If you’re a soccer nut, these stations are all the reason you need to order DirecTV.)

Fox Soccer and GolTV can be had as part of DirecTV’s Sports package, while Setanta is available a la carte.

Here are blurbs on GolTV and Setanta From the DirecTV website:

GolTV is the first and only television channel dedicated 100% to showcasing soccer. The network transmits more than 1,500 games per year with exclusive rights to the games from Italy, Spain, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Bolivia, El Salvador, Honduras & Guatemala. The channel offers the excitement of live matches, action-packed compacts, informative programming, 2 live daily news updates and tournament play.

Setanta Sports was established in 1996 in the United States. It began as a Pay Per View and Closed Circuit television business and was extremely successful in serving a passionate audience of primarily European expatriates by providing live sports broadcasts to pubs and clubs across the country. On April 26, 2005, a full sports television channel dedicated to distinctly European and international football, world-class rugby and other sports was established. The channel successfully launched with the live broadcast of the Champion’s League on the DIRECTV platform as an a la carte channel.

While I dig both A.C. Milan and Liverpool , I’ll be watching the game in the nifty Liverpool soccer replica jersey, that I rescued from eBay last year. It’s a little worse for washing machine wear, but hey, for a measly penny I can’t complain …
