AMD Licenses Rambus Memory Patents

Ah, it would seem that AMD has a little something on their mind with regard to Rambus. Besides, even if they do nothing with the license at first, owership has its benefits.

Rambus Inc. said Tuesday that it had licensed a broad range of technologies to Advanced Micro Devices in a deal worth $75 million over five years.

While the deal will not allow AMD to manufacture Rambus-designed memory chips themselves, the agreement covers the patents surrounding the memory controller logic needed to connect to XDR, Rambus’ eXtended Data Rate memories. In addition, Rambus patents covering DDR-2, DDR-3, FB-DIMM, and PCI Express technologies are included in the license, which can be renewed. [Read the rest]
