The Next Wi-Fi Standard Gets Confirmed

Blazing wireless speeds of up to 600Mbps is almost official as the IEEE Task Group “N” has voted to confirm the next standard, 802.11n. The next step is, “IEEE ratification process, which includes letter balloting, comment resolution, sponsor balloting and final ratification,” which Geekzone is reporting could take up to a year.

With companies such as Belkin already releasing “pre-N” hardware, we may be seeing true N access points and receivers by this Christmas. As is common with Apple, it may be the first to stuff an N wireless receiver into one of its laptops before any other manufacturer does. Maybe ’07 Macworld? Mmm, would that make it Airport Way Extreme?
