Bay City Bombers

Over the past couple of weeks, there have been a new television program called Texas Rollergirls. For many of us old time Warped readers, roller derby was a mainstay during the 1960s and 1970s, and ranked right up there with pro wrestling (or wrasslin’, depending where you are) as an entertainment form. So a quick Google search brought up some very interesting results. Take a look at today’s site, and you will see what we mean.

The site is called Bay City Bombers, and in their time, they were the Hulk Hogan of Roller Derby. Who could forget that combination of Charlie O’Connell and the Blonde Bomber, Joanie Weston. There was action all over the banked track, at speeds that would chill most of us to even attempt.

There is a complete history of the Bombers here, as well as the sport itself, since the Bombers were the sport at one time. It takes a some time to understand the sport, but basically it is a race around a track by two teams, and points are scored when the jammer(s) lap the teams. It can get quite interesting, and the current edition of the team continues that tradition.

You don’t have to be warped to like roller derby. But being a half bubble of plum can help, at least in my wife’s opinion. The Warp-o-Meter gives this site a 7, for old time’s sake, as well as new times.
