There are several different ways to create a table in Word. My preference is to use the Table command from the Insert tab to create the table and then type in my data. Others prefer to enter in the data first, then select the data and insert a table. With this method, Word generates a table where the number of columns and rows is based on the selected data.
You can also use the AutoCorrect feature of Word to create a table with a single row. What you do is use the pipe character (|) to identify cells and one hyphen character for each character space. For example, to create a table to five cells, you would type:
