Select A Vertical Block Of Text In Word

One of the frustrating things about Word is that it assumes when you drag your mouse upwards, you want to select all the text to the left of the cursor. Conversely, when you drag the mouse down, Word automatically selects the text to the right of the cursor.

What of you want to select a vertical block of text, without selecting the text to the right or the left of the cursor? Simple! Place the cursor at the start or end of the text you want to select. Hold down the Alt key then click and drag your mouse up or down and right or left (note: the real trick is to hold down the Alt key first then hold down your mouse key).
