Android Passes RIM BlackBerry In 2nd Quarter

In just a year, Android has emerged from having almost none of the smartphone market, to pass RIM’s BlackBerry series as the top selling OS in the 2nd quarter. According to NPD, Android owned one third of the market and the lead in smartphone sales during the 2nd quarter.

During the second quarter, about 33 percent of new smartphone purchases were for Android-based phones, compared to 28 percent for BlackBerry, and 22 percent for Apple’s iPhone.

Google’s strategy to get Android on as many phones as possible seems to be working quite well. It’s hardly mentioned that Verizon Wireless should be credited with most of this success. The company took Android and turned it into the Droid brand. With the Verizon/Droid marketing push, Android instantly became a true iPhone killer.
