The new Start screen offers users the ability to arrange live tiles and app shortcuts in a way that makes more sense to the user. It’s a far cry from the limited list of the old Start menu, but a lot of its power is buried in the interface. You wouldn’t know about much of its ability unless you stumbled across it accidentally.
One such feature is the ability to name app groupings. You can create multiple different columns for apps that divide them up and make it easier to find what you’re looking for. Without a name on top of the list, it would fall on your memory as to where exactly your favorite news app, video editor, or browser is located in the field of tiles.
Naming a group puts a big, legible title over the top of the grouping so you can categorize apps and organize them in a way that makes sense to you.
Here’s how to do it.
- Bring up the Start screen by clicking in the lower-left corner of the screen.
- Move your cursor to the lower-right corner and click the minus sign.
- Right-click a group you wish to name. A blue check mark should appear in the corner of the group.
- Select Name group in the bar that appears at the bottom of the screen.
- Enter a name you wish to give the group and click Name.
- Click anywhere on the screen to return to regular Start screen view.
You can also click and drag a group from the naming screen to change where in the Start screen it appears. For example, I tend to keep groups I use frequently toward the left so they appear first. System tools and other resources I don’t use as much would be pushed to the right.
You can rearrange individual tiles with a simple click and drag to where you want them to go. Dropping a tile in a blank space between groups creates a new group.
