Souny announced that it is launched a new website in Japan – www.p-tv.jp – which will allows the Playstation Portable to play movies, musice, and television shows. The service will begin July 27, the same date that the new 2.0 firmware will become availible. No plans have been announced for a similar service in the US.
Portable TV, operated by So-NET, will start off offering around 100 free selections, such as movie trailers and independent films.Premium content will be offered at a later date.
Each movie will be offered in 320×240, at about 30 minutes in length, and will be about 256MB in size. So, longer movies will require more than one download. The movies will be provided in H.264, the new high-quality movie format.
Access to Portable TV will be directly through the new web browser featured in the new firmware, because the content will be copyright protected. Premium movies can be stored on a memory stick, but not backed up on a hard drive; however, free content will not have that restriction.
Some companies that have signed up to offer content on this medium include: Aniplex, Asai Kikaku, Bandai Channel, BBB, Geo BB, Getty, Neo Index, So-net Channel 749, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Watanabe Entertainment.
