You know, I am going to go on record right here as saying that Windows Vista does look like they will have a lot to offer. Unfortunately, their official Website is very PR based and extremely short on details that I am interested in. And while this allows Microsoft to pull or add a feature without having people feeling shafted, it’s still really annoying.

If I was going to work with their Website, I would lose the bit about being clear, connected and etc. Instead, I would preach more about solutions to Win-rot and better options for dealing with programs being uninstalled. Since Vista will offer this, let’s hear more about these things specifically!

Also, after finding NOTHING about defragmenting hard drives on the Vista site (that I noticed), I managed to dig up something from Ars on the subject: It seems that we will still have some fragmentation, although it is going to be potentially better than what we see now with other versions of Windows.

Um, wow. While I think that it is really spectacular that they will have SuperFetch (a souped-up pre-fetch option) and automatic defragmenting for the drives, I’d also be interested in hearing how this automatic defragmenting works with CPU cycles and memory usage? Is this merely a glorified Norton System Works-like option Vista is giving us? Who knows…unless you were chosen as a beta tester I suppose.

So, my thinking is that if we can be assured that this ‘automatic defragmenting’ is not a resource hog, then I will give MS a partial thumbs up for dealing with the insane task of fighting with a fragmented hard drive. My reason for not giving Vista a full thumbs up on this matter stems from the fact that Unix-based systems have never subjected me to defragmenting. And when dealing with video, the last thing you want is to have your drives defragmenting constantly.

Will Vista be on my buy list? Not for a while I don’t imagine. Since I only need Windows for very select tasks, XP will meet with my needs for a few more years I imagine. Then again, I might just pick up a copy of Vista to check out the great visual effects, who knows?
