I have noticed in my travels that many people have a problem with which they are unable to view secure sites, such as Internet banking, e-mail, online stores, etc. after using Norton Internet Security for a while. The reason for your inability to view secure sites is that the NIS firewall becomes corrupted and blocks access to these Web sites. This can be frustrating as one day you are doing your online banking, and the next POOF! Its gone! Rest assured, this problem is quite common and I will be sure to help you fix it today!
As always, before you do ANYTHING to your computer you should probably back up. That is, if you care about your data! Now that you’ve backed up, which I am sure you have open up Norton Internet Security (this may take a while!) and click on the personal firewall button. Once the new window shows click configure. Now select advanced and hit general. You will now see a rules list, go thru this list and look for any entries that say Block access to secure sites. If any such entries exist, click modify and change them from ‘deny’ to ‘permit’. Now hit OK to save your changes and then ok close the other windows. Give your secure sites a try! You might just notice that the problem has been fixed. If not, then read ahead, there is more!
What you will need to continue:
- The access to the Norton software to reinstall
- Internet access
- This guide
Now that you’ve collected everything you need, you should go to this link and run the Norton Uninstall Tool, previously known as SymNRT. This will remove Norton from your system in a way that ‘add/remove programs’ is unable to. Once you have done this, your most of the way done! Now, you will want to go to this Microsoft site and download and run the Windows Script 5.6. This will repair scripting errors caused by Norton being corrupted. Once you have run the windows script, reboot your computer. You should now be able to browse these secure sites. You may wish to test this, but DON’T do anything further until you reinstall an antivirus on your computer!
Hopefully, with this article, you were able to access secure sites again and I have been able to give your computer a few more days before you throw it out a window!
