Yesterday’s piece about air conditioner filters brought an unexpected and interesting response from the gnome-o-sphere. Indoor air quality is an important factor in keeping a happy and healthy household … especially for folks that are plagued with allergies (which seems like half the population this spring) …

So what’s growing in your air ducts?

A Gnomie who happens to work for “major air conditioner manufacturer that prides itself on its Indoor Air Quality leadership claims,” kindly wrote:

You should write the date on the side of the filter so you’ll know how long it’s been there collecting crud the next time you replace it.

You also might think about one of the newer high efficiency filters (MERV 10 up to MERV 16 – that’s an efficiency rating) that only require changing once a year! They cost more, but last a lot longer. Probably would require modification to the system (adding a new filter box). I have one at home and it’s amazing how much dust it cuts down on in the house. Don’t bother with any of those electronic filters. They were good in their day but these hi-eff models work wonders!

Our friend adds, “Just be aware that there are alternatives out there to those thin cheap filters.”

I’ve put indoor air quality and a high efficiency air conditioner filter at the top of my list of things to do here at ranchero indebto … the list that never seems to end …
