It is hard to remember all the dos and don’ts while you are in the middle of a presentation. However, there are a few important points that you need to keep in mind as you start out. These are simple guidelines that every presenter should follow to make their presentation a good one. If you think you will forget them, write them down on a piece of paper and leave it in front of you while you are presenting. A simple glance at it during your presentation may be enough to remind you to slow down or smile.

When it comes time to making the presentation remember to:

  • Make sure that you introduce yourself to the audience. Give them your name and a brief but strong summary about yourself. Keep the introduction short. The audience is there to hear your presentation, not learn about your life story.
  • Speak slowly and clearly. Try not to rush through the presentation by talking too quickly and remember to spit out your gum.
  • Take a few breaths after hitting an important idea. It is good to pause after important points so the audience has a few moments to think about what you have just said.
  • Add a in a few jokes. Laughter is a great way to break the ice. However, don’t over do it.
  • Leave some time for questions. Let the audience ask questions at the end of the presentation. Questions are a good thing because it demonstrates that the audience has been engaged in your presentation.
  • Jot down a few notes. Once your presentation is complete, write down a few notes about what you did well and what you feel you can improve upon. Learn from each presentation and use this information for the next one.
