By default, Word saves all new Word files as .docs. However, you can change the default file format. For example, you may want to have all new Word files saved as rich text format (RTF).

To change the default file format for new Word files, complete the steps that are listed below.

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. From the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. From the Options window, click the Save tab.
  4. Under the Default format section, click the drop down arrow beside the Save word files as field.
  5. Select the file format you want to use and click OK.
