Advertising a product in our society is not always about advertising the product. Sometimes it is how it is presented. Look at the GEICO gecko, the Budweiser clydesdales, and the Taco Bell chihuahua. Some advertising campaigns are so good that people will remember the ad and not what the ad was selling. Well, today’s Warped site is about advertising, and how one person is making a buck doing it.
The site is called Rent My Chest. No, not that kind of chest. It is the chest of Lockergnome’s Chris Pirillo, a young man with an original idea on using the Internet to make some money. For an investment of only $20 (paid via PayPal), he will put your message on his chest (that is, his BARE chest), take a picture of it, and put it on his Web site. On this site he has ten pictures, and they are rotated using the FIFO principal (first one displayed is the first one replaced when a new one comes in). Your ad will stay on his page “until ten other saps belly up” (his words, not mine) and put up a message. He will put up just about any message you want, but he does reserve the right to refuse any “bustomer” (again, his words, not mine).
This is a really interesting site that has originality written all over it. It must work, he has over 85 customers so far. He’s probably spending it on magic markers and ink remover is my guess. The Warp-o-Meter rating on this site is 8.5.
