What’s the difference between spyware and a virus?

Confused? Most people are.

· Spyware and adware collect information about you without appropriate notice and consent.

· A computer virus spreads software, usually malicious in nature, from computer to computer.

There is a misconception on exactly what a PC user needs to protect their computer systems. On the one hand we have spyware. Programs such as Microsoft’s Windows Defender do a adequate job in keep spyware and adware off of your computer. But a anti-virus program such as AVG is also needed to keep viruses at bay, and to keep your system clean.
Some vendors such as Symantec, McAfee and now Microsoft, offer software suites that address all of these problems and may add additional features for added protection. The only problem I have seen with these types of suites in general, is that they use large amounts of a computers resources and may slow down your system.

I recommend to my clients a combination of many different FREE softwares, to keep their systems protected. Take a look around here and you will find many suggestions from myself and others on exactly what software to use.
