Microsoft on December 22, 2006 has extended the warranty on its popular Xbox 360 from 90 days to one year. This coincides with the warranties offered by Nintendo Wii and Sony’s PS3.

In addition Microsoft is planning to reimburse those who have paid for repair costs prior to the warranty on their consoles. This reimbursement according to Microsoft, will be done automatically.

Some Internet sites have indicated that about 3% of Xbox 360s are defective upon activation by the customer. Microsoft states that the warranty extension was not part of any customer complaints, but more in line with customer satisfaction.

Accessories are not covered by the extended warranty, and still carry only 90 day warranties.

Microsoft has released the complete details here.
