VMware is offering a Free converter which will unable the user to convert physical machines to virtual machines using a simple Wizard that guides the user step by step. I have found a great tutorial you can follow that will assist you in setting up your new vitualization system.

The software is further described as:

“VMware Converter quickly converts Microsoft Windows based physical machines and third party image formats to VMware virtual machines. It also converts virtual machines between VMware platforms. Automate and simplify physical to virtual machine conversions as well as conversions between virtual machine formats with VMware Converter. ”
Note: This is not for the novice. Only experienced users should play with the converter. A test system is highly recommended.

So I downloaded a copy of WMware Converter 3.0 to a test system which is using Windows 2003 Server edition, to see how well it worked. I followed the tutorial listed below, exactly. Then I followed the directions for installing on a Linux distro, in this case Unbuntu, since it was recommended by the author of the tutorial.

It worked perfectly, right up until the hard disk starting to knock! Ooops. I used a old hard disk for this experiment. And it must of seen it’s day. After several reboots it stopped all together.

But the important thing is that it does work. And follow the tutorial exactly. No deviating.
