Don’t you feel badly for Dirk Nowitzki? – He had a brilliant regular season. His Dallas Mavericks won sixty seven (67) games during the regular season. Many people consider Dirk Nowitzki to be the Most Valuable Player for the 2006-2007 NBA campaign. In an elimination game against the Golden State Warriors, Dirk Nowitzki scored eight (8) points – making just two shots out of thirteen attempts from the field.

The first Nowitzki field goal was in the final minute of the first half. By the time Dirk Nowitzki scored his second and final field goal, his team was trailing by twenty three points. Essentially, the outcome of the game was determined at this point. It was a mere matter of playing out the minutes.

Sports can be cruel.

What happened? Was it an ‘Alex Rodriguez moment’? The rest of the box score reads – two assists and three turn-overs. It was a bad night for Dirk Nowitzki. It was a bad night for the Mavericks. – I was able to watch bits of the game. The venue was one in which a group of mostly Laker fans gather to watch basketball and to support the brewing industry. During the first half, the noise level was the usual rowdy commotion. Then, as the second half started and Golden State started to edge away, it became more and more quiet. It was an eerie quiet. People could not believe what they were seeing on the television screens. One of the regulars described it afterwards as “watching a train wreck”.

People stayed for hours after the game. This was a game to talk about and dissect. This was historical. It was a dreadful for Dirk Nowitzki. It was a cruel early exit from the playoffs… and a huge celebration for the Golden State Warriors.
