The FBI has identified over 1 million computers that are infected with malware during its Operation Bot Roast. They are starting to contact each of these one million computer owners directly and with the help of partners but they won’t be doing it through email.
The FBI will not contact you online and request your personal information so be wary of fraud schemes that request this type of information, especially via unsolicited emails. To report fraudulent activity or financial scams, contact the nearest FBI office or police department, and file a complaint online with the Internet Crime Complaint Center, www.ic3.gov.
I’d be wary of even phone calls. Don’t give out any personal information without first confirming who you’re speaking with is actually an agent. You can ask for their name and then look up the FBI’s number in the white page and call them directly yourself.
