Today, usrbingeek posts:
Jeremy Kirk at ComputerWorld reports that identity theft and data security breaches are starting at gas stations.
Now there is a comforting thought. I use my credit card at gas stations quite often. Now according to Steve’s report, this may prove to be a dangerous idea. He goes on to say:
Since WEP is so easily cracked, often within just seconds, everything can be captured by attackers and used to make credit cards and steal the identities of unsuspecting customers that were just filling up their vehicles.
Fantastic! We now have gas stations using WEP, which is barely strong enough for casual home use. Hell, even WPA is out of the question. And if those gas stations simply must go this route, at least they can provide a stronger level of protection if nothing else…
Solution: At this point, I am very careful of where I pay by credit card these days. But even still, is it time to start buying myself prepaid gas cards that do not log my personal information? They would be faster than cash and so long as they do not have any personal information stored on them, safer than using my credit card as well.
