When you install Vista and your desktop appears for the first time, the only desktop icon that appears is the Recycle Bin. You will likely want to put a few of the familiar and useful icons back on the desktop right away. The process is similar to that in Windows XP with a few subtle differences.

To add icons to the Vista desktop:

  1. Right click a blank area of your desktop and click Personalize.
  2. From the list of tasks, click Change desktop icons.
  3. Select each icon you want displayed on the desktop.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Close the Personalization window.
