American Airlines must have done their due diligence and researched whether the customers the airlines services want internet onboard flights. The results of the focus groups and market research seem to be a ‘yes’ – and so the internet will be available on American Airlines soon:
“NEW YORK (Reuters) — AMR Corp’s American Airlines is preparing to be one of the first U.S. carriers to offer Internet access on domestic flights.
…In-flight Internet access has long been sought by airlines in the battle for lucrative business travelers. Southwest Airlines Co., which hopes to attract more business fliers, has said it is working on offering Internet on-board its planes.”

At a hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) per plane for equipment, the cost of installation to the fleet will be a significant expenditure, especially in an industry whose stock has struggled. Undoubtedly, onboard internet will be advertised as another reason to fly American Airlines. Just another step towards the ubiquitous internet…
