One only has to do a Google search for Goobuntu to find a wide array of different articles concerning this Google operating system that is said to be used internally at Google. One also needs to look at the reasoning behind such articles and why this topic continues to draw attention.

On the fact side, both Google and Ubuntu folks may confirm that there is really a distribution called Goobuntu, which Google does in fact use internally. But both companies deny that this operating system will be made available publicly. This is where the rumor mill seems to stop. With dreams of a Linux based operating system coming from Google shattered, one would think that the rumors would cease as well.

There was a time when it was Microsoft who drew the attention and was favored as being a main source of rumors. But times have changed and now it is Google, Ubuntu, Apple, and others who are in the limelight. I know that I myself love to read about the many proposed products that Google and others have waiting in the wings. I was also happy to read this past week that Google actually will be coming out with a Google phone sometime next year. Which brings to mind that the Google phone started out as a rumor as well. So can we discount that Google will not release its own operating system?

I know, I know. It said it wouldn’t release it publicly and that it was for internal use only. But we all know that sometimes denials are to keep the rumormongers off track while the true purpose is concealed from public view.

Which brings up a question. Is Google going to release its own operating system sometime in the future or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Comments welcome.
