The great operating system debate goes on. The more tech oriented people (geeks) do a good job of trying out every operating system that comes down the road. We also tend to critique it in all dimensions. While the designers of the software may appreciate and use the feedback we provide them, the most important feedback has to come from the average consumer that walks into the computer store, buys a computer and takes it home fully expecting it to do what he/she wants it to do. It has to satisfy the consumer’s needs without them having to install downloads, tweak this or setup that.
The average consumer doesn’t care about all the technical aspects of their system. They just want it to work! Until an operating can do that without flaw, the great debate will go on.
Ultimately we will see a minimalist box that connects to the internet and uses an operating system there. I don’t think we will see the ultimate operating system until that happens. Gone will be the massive hard drives, expensive software, pc maintenance requirements, and all the associated headaches of keeping it all running properly. Sitting on our desk will be what we called in the 80’s “a dumb terminal”.
WebTV was and is a start in that direction. Unfortunately the advancement of WebTV is minimal at best right now.
The future will be changing rapidly and this concept is not far off. What are we going to blog about then?
