Alex Rodriguez has announced that he will void his contract with the New York Yankees and test the free agency market. The announcement itself comes as no surprise. It is a financial decision. What is curious is the timing of the announcement.
The announcement came during Game 4 of the World Series. It guaranteed that the announcement would capture the full attention of baseball people – from the decision makers to the lowly fan. Perhaps Alex Rodriguez needed the attention. It certainly pulled commentary away from the Rockies and Red Sox, in what was the last game of the season.
Undoubtedly, Alex Rodriguez is a stellar baseball player. However, this was not his World Series. The timing of the announcement makes it appear that Mr Rodriguez thinks that he is bigger than the sport itself. It smacked of truly poor sportsmanship. If the timing was not Mr Rodriguez’s doing, it would behoove him to have people with more respect for the game working for him. And if this timing was indeed Alex Rodriguez’s decision, that is shameful.
