This is a serious tool, with a fun side if you want to create 3D images, and can visualize the images in your mind. Remember this is open source and free, so please do not expect features like “Solid Works” TM, or other commercial package that you pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for. Misfit Model 3D is capable of quite good looking graphics, but you will have to do the work to get the best results. The file formats that are currently stable are Misfit MM3D, Milkshape MS3D, Quake MD2, Wavefront OBJ. The Cal3D file format is currently in progress, and the 3DS and Quake MD3 formats are considered beta. What I really like is the ability to save 2D images like PNG, JPEG, BMP, and more. These file formats are provided by the QT toolkit upon which Misft Model 3D is built. If you have no idea what the TrollTech QT framework is all about then don’t worry since the developers have a complete binary installer for us Windows(TM) folks who are not used to placing stuff in certain directories. A screenshot located here shows the cartoon like characters that can be created by this application.
The feature list includes skeleton animation, merging of models into a single larger model, texture application, and frame animations with operations like copy split and merge.
