Vista will warn you when you are running low on disk space. This may be a useful reminder for some users that it’s time to do a bit of maintenance and delete some files you no longer need. Some users keep a close eye on the amount of free disk space they have left and may feel that an additional warning is not necessary.

You can disable these warning messages by tweaking the registry. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, make sure you perform a registry backup before you make any changes. Once you are ready you can use the steps below to rid yourself of the low disk space warning.

  1. Click Start and type Registry Editor in the Search field. .
  2. Within the Registry Editor, locate the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.
  3. From the File menu, point to New, and click DWORD Value.
  4. Type in NoLowDiskSpaceChecks and press Enter.
  5. Double click the new value.
  6. Enter 1 and click OK.
