A friend of mine was headed for a job in Iraq as a helpdesk tech. For some reason he didn’t get complete security clearance to go over there. He really wanted to go because the money he would’ve made a ton of money. He thought it was completely worth it to go over there for a few years and take home a bundle. Here’s how his salary would’ve broken down:
Salary @ $40/hr: $80,371.20
20 hours OT @ $32.12/hr: $34,444.80
Sign on bonus: $22,532.00
Total: $137,348.00/yr

We wish to confirm our offer of employment on the TAC-SWACAA Project as
aHelp Desk Administrator . The effective date is to be determined.
Under the terms of this offer you will attend a one-week orientation
meeting at CRC, on a date to be determined, and following that meeting,
deploy to Iraq.
This offer includes the following entitlements, which will be effective
on your hire date except for Danger and Hardship Pay, which will be
effective upon your arrival at your work location:
Base Hourly Rate: $22.08
Danger Pay: 35% of Base Hourly Rate
Hardship Pay: 35% of Base Hourly Rate
Work Week: 60 hours
Vacation: 192 hours per year (accrued at 16 hours per month).
Vacation Hours: Paid at Base Hourly Rate
Sick Time: 48 hours per contract year
Housing: Provided at no cost to employee
Meals: To be provided by the government while forward deployed
Sign-On Bonus: $9,755.00 paid in two installments: $4,877.50 paid on
first full payroll. $4,877.50 paid at the completion of 6 months of
employment. Successful completion of the one-year contract is required
to prevent forfeiture of the Sign-On bonus
Travel Allowance: $3,000.00 annually paid in two installments;
$1,500.00 paid at six months of employment; $1,500.00 paid at 12 months
of employment
Vacation In Lieu of Holidays: 96 hours per year, accrued @ 9.6 hours
for the first 10 months of each anniversary year.
Term of Employment: 1 Year
Completion Bonus $12,777.00 Paid at end of contract.
Airfare Economy airfare from Home of Record to work site and return
upon contract completion. Mobilization costs will be deducted upon
failure to complete contract.
Drug Screening Requirement
Shipping Allowance: The baggage allowance is one 50 lb bag plus
military-issued equipment received at CRC
Clearance: Secret
Note: Danger and Hardship Pay will be paid on 40 hours per week.
Danger/Hardship Pay will not apply to overtime, vacation, sick, personal
or holiday hours. Danger/Hardship pay is established by the Department
of State and approved by the Contracting Officer. The danger/hardship
pay is subject to change or discontinue without notice.
In addition to the above, you are eligible for enrollment in our
comprehensive Project Benefits Program. Effective January 1, 2007 all
international ITT Systems Division employees will be required to have
some type of medical coverage: Aetna Global company sponsored medical,
Aetna Catastrophic medical coverage, or proof of TRICARE eligibility is
acceptable. If coverage is waived or proof of eligibility in TRICARE
cannot be provided the employee will be enrolled in compulsory Aetna
Catastrophic medical coverage. Employee will be responsible for share
