The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is one of the premier dog event for confirmation. It will be held at Madison Square Garden, New York on February 11 and February 12, 2008. If you are in New York City next week, it is a chance to see some beautiful dogs. And there is a broadcast schedule on the Westminster Kennel Club site. You may want to check for a broadcast time in your area.

Some people regard such dog shows as ‘doggy beauty contests’. However, it is much more than that. The judges are looking for a dog that comes closest to perfection, in terms of the ideal description of the dog and its breed. The judges are looking for such elements as structure, gait, temperament and so forth. Their guide is the theoretical ideal – what the perfect dog for that breed should be.

Each breed was developed for a specific purpose. The structure, coat, personality and other factors are the results of decades of work. Responsible breeders work toward that ideal of perfection. It is, however, not just so that it is pleasing to the eye. It is for the health of future generations. The ideal would be free of structural flaws that would be a negative health factor. When the dog is able to meet the standard, it is better able to do the work for which it was intended.

There is an incredible amount of work to reach such a prestigious show. Each participant in the Westminster Kennel Club Show has a winning history. These are valuable animals and excellent representatives of their breed. To use a sports analogy, this is the ‘all star game’. These dogs are terrific. They are veterans and enjoy being part of the show. Just watch the reaction that these dogs have to applause. At this level, they are performers and having loads of fun.
