I think that Apple really has some great ideas when it comes to product design and engineering. The new Mac Pro is absolutely beautiful and the iMac is a work of art (No, I’m not getting paid to say this). But I think there are some serious overpricing issues in the company as well.

Breakdown:

_________________________________________________________

$1200 – “Computer A”

2 GHz Dual Core CPU
128MB video card
1GB RAM

$1160 – “Computer B”

2.4 GHz Quad Core CPU
256MB video card
3GB RAM

Looking only at the specifications listed above, which computer would you want to buy? By the way, Computer A is an iMac, and Computer B is a PC.

The only thing that holds Apple together on the computer side of the company (aside from some slick design), is OS X.

Jobs overcharges because he can. If you want the OS, you have to buy a Mac.

But what if all that was to change? What if Steve opened up the doors to OEMs and allowed PCs to ship with Mac OS X? What if a retail “PC Edition” was released that would allow existing PCers to run Mac?

Radical, yes. But it’s possible. Check out www.osx86.com.

But this doesn’t mean that Apple would have to completely halt production of Macs. I know plenty of people who would gladly spend a little extra money just to get a cool-looking Mac. And besides, some of the power in the Mac Pro can’t be beat in a stock PC.

The bottom line is that Apple could still make a plethora of money while maximizing compatibility with the rest of the world.
