Today Helen asks:

I have Internet Explorer and am unable to send emails from the web – a notice says Default client is not properly installed! I have Windows Mail.

Option one.
Ouch, this is no fun indeed. Here is what you can do. From this guide, follow the path to locate your default mail client. Apply the changes and you should be golden.
Option two – there is no option for default Windows Mail?

Should you be one of those not so luck folks who discovers that Vista has neglected to provide you with this option, there is a fix available, be it a bit geeky.

Assuming you are not familiar with the Windows registry, you will be making an edit to it. Not entering the information directly mind you, rather by downloading something that will ‘merge’ a fix, should the option to setup Windows Mail as your default mail client not show up in the guide linked above.

Before doing anything, because this is Windows, I would highly suggest backing up your registry before making any changes to it at all. Using the back-up guide linked above, it should prove fairly painless. Now once this is done and saved onto something like a flash drive or CD, you are ready to implement the mail fix. Follow these instructions to the letter and download and Save As with the file located on the previous page marked “Attachment”. I have examined the reg file myself, everything looks fine for use to me, be it clear that I make no promises or warranty of success. Anyone who chooses to edit the registry is doing so at their own risk.

With any luck, I sincerely hope that you simply have the Windows Mail option in your default applications list as it will be a LOT simpler. Good luck!
