Over the years, Marissa Mayer has become the unofficial spokes-person of Google. Her official title is Vice President, Search Products & User Experience. And she is Google Employee Number Nineteen.

Being an early employee of a tech start-up means that there is the potential of considerable wealth if there is success or a buy-out from an established tech giant. Google has succeeded and, as a result, Marissa Mayer’s compensation may be in the hundreds of millions.

The internet speculation is that this is the year that Marissa Mayer is leaving Google:

“Marissa Mayer, one of Google’s oldest employees (that is, in years of service), may be considering a departure to what Gawker thinks is a more suiting position at Stanford. Currently, she works at Google as Vice President of Search Product and User Experience — meaning she’s pretty much in charge of making users happy, and therefore making Google successful.”

This may fall into the tech rumour category such as the speculation on Steve Jobs’ health. Rumours of ill health (or multiple demises) for Mr Jobs moves the stock market. Perhaps there will be a Marissa Mayer job watch now. Surely Marissa Mayer rumour sites will multiply for 2009.
