Facebook, like it or not, is doing pretty well. Yet MySpace is fast becoming the next “Friendster” with regard to anyone actually using it with any seriousness. As you can see from this trend report, Friendster has been dead for years as far as the news sites are concerned and MySpace is quickly joining them.
So why is there such a shift here? Well it seems to me, looking at the trends tells a pretty clear story. Facebook is doing well in other countries while MySpace hardly seems to exist at all. But then you look here, where it is just the US in the last 12 months examined, it seems that location has nothing to do with it. Again, MySpace is being stomped – why? Simple, because in this case, the trends mean nothing.
The fact of the matter no one really knows why one service does better than another in the social space. We all like to think we do, but the fact of the matter is that we haven’t a clue. Speaking for myself, someone who dislikes Facebook as much as MySpace, I think it has to do with where Facebook is headed while MySpace is basically in the same place it was when it was created. Facebook is looking at API development, will soon be accessible from just about anything. Back at MySpace – nothing but crickets…despite the new CEO coming into play.
