According to a theregister.co.uk article, “A Royal Navy warship may have come within seconds of opening fire on Unidentified Flying Objects above Merseyside, possibly narrowly avoiding the precipitation of an interstellar war and the extirpation of humanity by testy aliens.”
According to reports, the UFOs (speculated to have been visiting spacecraft from beyond our solar system) were tracked on naval weapons radars.
Apparently, this isn’t the first report of extraterrestrial craft by a U.K. paper. The Telegraph reported, last week, of a sighting of “orange, ball-shaped” UFOs cruising between South Liverpool and Southport. These vehicles were reported by witness to be “orange and and blob-like,” and “drop fire at times.” Some believed that the may have been Chinese lanterns, but that theory was dropped for a more crowd pleasing one, of interstellar proportions.
Ok, then the Telegraphentered the debate with revelations from an “ex-military” source, regarding the presence of the HMS Daring (a Royal Navy Type 45 Destroyer) which was docked in Liverpool as the UFOs passed over:”The guns on the ships are powered by radar,” said the source, “but military radar and civilian radar work on different frequencies, so that is probably why the airport said it had not picked anything up.”
The Telegraph stated that the UFOs were in actuality “countermeasure flares used to test the radar systems of huge anti-missile guns on the ship. What happened was a plane flew over at high altitude following the path of the river and dropped the counter measures, which the radar tracked,” said the Telegraph’s unnamed source.
“That’s why people reported seeing them where they did, from Mossley Hill up to Southport.”
Actually, the ships are enabled for the radar equipped firepower, but don’t have them yet (due to financial issues). The plan is to take weapons from older ships as they retire. But, the HMS Daring does have a 4.5-inch main gun, and a pair of ordinary 30mm cannons.
The 4.5″ gun turret can be fired under radar control, but it would be a poor choice in an anti-aircraft battle with today’s military aircraft. They also don’t have any PAAMS missiles (their primary armament) at their disposal.
The “Radar Countermeasure Flares” statement is bullshit. Flares wouldn’t confuse radar. Radar is a stream of extrasensory sound that bounces off of solid objects. The only thing that might be tripped by flares is infrared. Also, what military is going to be setting off flares over a densely populated area? What is this, Phoenix?
Honestly, I would have thought the U.K. government would have hid it a little better, if it were within their control. They are very subconscious over their image to the rest of the world, so letting their army setting off flares over a large metropolitan area doesn’t seem too plausible. On the other hand, if these were interstellar, extraterrestrial travelers, why did they come in broken down, fire dropping, orange blobs. The jury in my head is still out on this one.
