With the heat of summer upon us, I imagine that there are many who might be cleaning out the computer case, and finding that perhaps the old cooler just might be in need of an update.

From Japan, Scythe has made many coolers that are a terrific value, while doing a really fine job of getting things cool. The company has never come out on top in the CPU cooler shootouts I’ve seen, but it is frequently number two, or three, and always well down in the pack when it comes to top price.

The new design from them, the Zipang 2, is a very nice looking design, which has the largest fan I believe I’ve ever noticed on a manufacturer’s device. At 140 mm, you just know it is going to move some air, and because it faces downward, it should cool the MOSFETS and capacitors close to the CPU socket. That’s nice for those who don’t have the motherboards with staggered cooling pipe solutions making their way around the motherboard.

from Tech Connect

Japanese cooling specialist Scythe has now announced the second coming of the Zipang. Seen below, the Zipang 2 CPU cooler measures 145 x 149 x 106 mm, weights 715 grams and features a M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow Pass-Through Structure) heatsink, a nickle-plated copper base, six 6mm heatsinks and a 140mm Kaze Maru fan which works at 1000 RPM and has a sound output of just under 23 dBA.

The Zipang 2 is compatible with Intel Socket 478, LGA 775, LGA 1366, and AMD Socket 754, 939, 940, AM2, AM2+, AM3 processors, and is priced at $58 / 39 Euro (without VAT). For more info on the second-generation Zipang check out Scythe’s website

One more thing, the website gives a few more descriptions –

Scythe Kaze Maru 140 mm Fan
By applying an original Scythe Kaze Maru fan, wider area of the components on the motherboard can be cooled compared to 120 mm fans while keeping low noise and high cooling ability for the CPU.

V.T.M.S. (Versatile Tool-Free Multiplatform System)
Newly developed & patented mounting mechanism “VTMS” allows user to install Zipang 2 CPU Cooler without any tools and hassle.

M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow Pass-Through Structure)
By introducing the newly developed M.A.P.S. (Multiple Airflow Pass-Through Structure), the heatsink has been optimized to fully utilize the ability of the included Scythe original Kaze Maru 140 mm case fan.

Total 6 Heatpipe
With total 6 x 6 mm diameter copper heatpipe to provide the top cooling performance!

Wide Range Cooling
Optimized to get its performance from low-rpm to high-rpm to meet the demand from silent users to heavy-core overclockers.  All in one solution for your PC system.

Optional 120 mm Fan
An optional 120 mm fan can be attached to Zipang 2 CPU Cooler using the Scythe 12 cm Fan Clips.

The website also makes a point of appraising the user that the base of the heatsink is pure copper, with nickel plating on the topside. This is very nice because you get the heat dissipation of copper without the possibility of discoloration over time.
