How wild would it be to use your instant messenger accounts from the Linux command line. Sounds insane, doesn’t it? Well believe it or not, it’s not only possible…it’s not that difficult. Enter a program called Bitlbee.
Basically Bitlbee is an IRC that happens to work well with the protocols for various instant messenger clients. Overall, it’s pretty exciting stuff. Some of the text based protocols supported include Yahoo, MSN and AIM. I think Gtalk (Jabber) is included as well, but have not yet had the opportunity to try it just yet.
So it this going to be a replacement for your current IM? Speaking strictly for myself, not too likely. While there are some things that I prefer to do in a command line shell, using IRC type stuff is simply not among them.
