Essentially what I wanted was a replacement Treo 700p with a faster processor and bigger screen.  Without even trying one out, the Droid passed that test.

Tonight kind of aced it for the device, though.

This is not a perfect device, as perfect is different for everyone.  Quite frankly, I’m struggling with both the pull out and onscreen keyboards.  Oddly enough, the onscreen one seems more accurate.  And yes, the battery could use a bit more time between charges but I love that it plugs into a usb port and charges up.

The best way I can describe the phone is as a small computer.  In some ways, it does everything my laptop does, yet it fits in a small pouch.  I am satisfied beyond belief with the phone part.  It’s not even worth mentioning further.

Today I made sure it was charged.  We went visiting, so I naturally took it with me.  I forgot to check something on Ebay, so I brought it right up on the browser (there’s also an Opera browser available).  Since I was nearing work, I checked my work email to make sure nothing needed my attention (who am I kidding – the network never fails to let me know when it needs something).

When we got to our destination, I found out both friends were iPhoners.  They were suitably impressed with the Droid.  The real fun came as we were breaking out the guitars.  I remembered I downloaded some guitar tuners, so I fired them up.  If that isn’t the most handy thing, I’ll be damned.  Everybody got to tune up to my phone 🙂

For Turkey Day we visited family.  Everyone found the phone interesting, although Mom said it was too heavy.  I love Mom and we’ll leave it at that.  The kids (and wife and kids) loved the G-tar app where you can strum.  The four year old nephew went nuts over it and grasped it immediately.

The women went nuts when I found an app called Shoes, all about what you think it’s about.  The wife has two versions of solitaire and can already operate the phone like a pro.

The camera has gotten a lot of bad press but it seems to do a decent job.  My problem hasn’t changed: trying to take pictures of a black dog is damn near impossible.  I got one of him with what looked like green lasers coming out of his eyes… it was almost eerie.  The camera even makes that stupid shutter noise when you hit the button (that will be the first thing to go).  It comes complete with flash.

When I’m bored, I check to see what’s new in the app store.  For the ADD kids who need constant entertainment, this is the perfect device.

APPS?

We got apps.

BlueRSS: a decent RSS feed reader, but it seems to want you to go to the site to read the posts.

iMusic: very cool MP3 finder and downloader

tv.com: watch tv shows(!)

BBC News: what you think it is

Apps Organizer: list by apps or labels

QuickUninstall: ad-supported uninstaller, much faster than using the system’s method
