Has anyone ever told you to think outside of the box? ‘Outside of the box’ is a phrase that is often thrown around the workplace. But what exactly does it mean to think ‘outside of the box’ or to be an ‘outside of the box thinker’? These types of thinkers generally display certain characteristics. If your manager tells you to think ‘outside of the box,’ here is what you need to do:
- Consider and be open to other ideas. A closed-minded thinker assumes their idea is the only one. To be an out of the box thinker, you need to be open to other ideas which will allow you to tap into more innovative solutions.
- Be open to new ways of doing things. Out of box thinkers are able to adopt new ways to solving problems. Those who are not open to new ways, typically miss out on innovative solutions.
- Pay attention to others. The suggestions of your co-workers should stimulate your creativity and can lead to more innovative ideas and solutions.
- Maintain a Positive Attitude. Never dismiss the ideas, suggestions and opinions of others. Remember that each one of your colleagues is a potential source of new and more innovative solutions.
