Looks like the Google Digital Books project was not met with open arms in France by those holding the copyrights of said material. Seems a court in Paris ruled against Google and in favor of those affected French publishers.
Google maintains that the publishers had the rights to the published hard copies, but lacked the exclusive rights to digital distribution. Clearly both parties see this issue very differently.
I personally agree with the French court in this instance. The IP involved here was clearly not Google’s to begin with. So perhaps Google needs to rethink their efforts with the Book Project. They continue to run into road bumps along the way that are shaping up to be deal breakers.
