Ever wonder how to format fractions in Word? In some cases, Word formats fractions automatically (i.e. ½). However, for less common fractions, you may be left with a inconsistent formatting (i.e. 7/8).

One way around this is to change the font characteristics of the characters as described below.

  1. Type in a fraction, such as 5/6.
  2. Select the numerator. From the Format menu, click Font. Click Superscript. Click OK.
  3. Select the denominator. From the Format menu, click Font. Click Subscript. Click OK.
  4. Replace the slash with a different “slash-type” symbol, if desired.
