When I first read this article I was at first mildly annoyed since I was not sure what the purpose was in asking people to trade in their Bibles for porn. I also had to keep my own beliefs in check and try not to be bigoted against these atheists, since my views definitely differ from theirs. In what appears to be an attempt to attack the beliefs of others, the backers of the program, which they call Smut For Smut, embraces an argument that on the surface wants to be judged as intellectual, but under the surface is nothing more than a religious attack. These Smut For Smut students also will take in the Koran or Bhagavad Gita for porn, so they are at least attacking other beliefs as well.

When asked why these students were doing this and what their aims were, a spokesman for the group stated the following:

Well, we have Bronze Aged tribal nonsense, these things written by people in tents ages ago, and we’re using this to renounce science standards in our classrooms in America.  We’re using it to kind of influence our political agenda.

And we’ve read it.  Atheists actually tend to be rather knowledgeable about scripture, and we are using this as a medium to get people to know what’s actually within the religious text that they hold so dear.

Well, first of all, you know, pornography gets a lot of negative press, and it’s smut.  A lot of it really is.  And we wanted to make the comparison between that and the smut that is religious scripture or a lot of it, you know.  The stuff that says a woman is worth half a man, the things that say, you know, you should beat children.

These things aren’t acceptable in our society, and if pornography is not acceptable, then these things surely aren’t.  At the very least, what we’re doing is trading something that’s very, very bad for something that’s only moderately bad.

I seriously doubt that anyone would advocate the beating of children or that men are worth more than females. What we do need to remember is that the Bible is a history of the past and that some of these things happened. Those happenings could have been edited out of the Bible but instead they remain as a lesson to what was the past.

Saying that the Bible and porn are even similar is a stretch. I am not sure what value porn even has in our society but I do know that the Bible provides some people with relief and comfort in their lives. Comparing the Bible to porn insults the intelligence of those that these students are attempting to influence.

Just my 2 cents.
