By default, when you open Outlook, it open to the Outlook Today view. In Outlook 2007, the Outlook Today pane includes a summary of your calendar appointments, tasks and messages. This is great for those people who want to see a quick summary.

Personally, when I open Outlook, I want it to open directly to my inbox. The nice thing about Outlook 2007, is that even though I’ve customized it to open directly to my inbox, I can still see a summary of my calendar appointments and tasks under the To-Do-Bar.

You can customize Outlook to open to any of your mail folders. To customize the startup folder in Outlook 2007:

  1. From the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Other tab.
  3. Click the Advanced Options button under the General section.
  4. Click the Browse button beside the Startup in this folder option.
  5. In the Select Folder dialog box, select your preferred startup folder.
  6. Click OK.
