The political magazine New Republic will be putting up a $30 paywall starting tomorrow, April 7, 2010. Though some content will remain free — blog posts, online columns, and some special features — most content will be for pay only. The online portion of the magazine has over 1 million unique visitors every month and has increased its traffic by 30% during the last quarter. In addition, the magazine claims to have increased its ad revenues by threefold.

But the magazine plans on risking some of those ad dollars and traffic for bundled pricing plans.

Editor Frank Foer said in the release: “Our long-form journalism is the product of intensive reporting and extensive editing, an incredible investment of time and resources. When it appears in print, we put a price tag on it-and we’re committed to doing the same online.”
