When one purchases a computer in this size category, the words ‘laptop’ and ‘portable’ do not apply. This laptop weighs in at a very heavy 8.7 pounds making this beast heavy and not truly portable. If you want to sit this computer on your laptop, good luck. But, if you are looking for a replacement computer for a desktop unit, this computer could be the perfect replacement.
As little as 5 years ago, most laptop computers were no match for their more powerful desktop cousins. That was than and this is now. The current crop of laptop computers compare favorable with desktops of equal cpu power and RAM. So it was only a matter of time when people starting think of a laptop computer to replace their desktop. Why?
My main reason was size. A desktop hogs way to much desk space. Between the keyboard, speakers, mouse and tangle of wires, a laptop has a smaller foot print. Plus you can move the laptop around your home or outside in the yard on those nice summer days without issue. You can also take your laptop with you when you travel. Though I must admit a 18.4 laptop at 8.7 pounds may be a little heavy to lug through airports.
I first got a look at the Toshiba 18.4 laptop last night during a high school graduation party I attended. One of the parents of a graduate had bought them this computer as a graduation present. One word came to my mind. Impressive. Not only was the screen bright and visually pleasing, but the specifications were impressive as well.
AMD dual core at 2.3 MHZ, 4 GB Ram,a huge 500GB hard disk, plus a CD/DVD burner, and ATI Radeon 4200 HD graphic card. Toss in wireless ‘n’ support, webcam, facial recognition software, 5-1 media reader, 4 USB ports, 1 sata port, and Dolby Sound with Harmon Karmen speakers and you have a very nice unit.
The computer was purchased through Amazon for $757.99 and free shipping.
