Since posting my recent screencast on hosting on-line mixes, I’ve had several people enquire about my minimal Firefox bookmarks layout.

Displaying only favicons rather than full site titles can be achieved by simply editing all of your shortcuts and removing the text altogether. Unfortunately this method does mean changing each bookmark manually, and if you forget what a certain icon represents you’re pretty much out of luck.

A far more elegant solution is to use a small add-on for Firefox called Smart Bookmarks Bar.

After installing the extension, your shortcuts bar will display only the favicons of your favourite sites, but you can still hover the cursor over them to reveal the title. You’ve now got four times the space for bookmarks and increased your productivity!

Smart Bookmarks Bar works with Firefox: 1.5 – 3.6 and is a free download.
