My wife’s niece came to visit us in April, and we ended up playing tourist, taking her to Branson, Mo. During our visit we ended up in a bookstore and the niece bought us Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. She said that it was recommended to her by her sister who had stated that it was one of the best Christian books she had ever read. We thanked her for the gift and I didn’t give it much thought. I knew very little about Rick Warren except for the fact that he was a pastor at a church in California, and that he had interviewed both Obama and McCain during the presidential campaign.
Some of you who read this review may feel uneasy about scripture from the Bible and the word of God. If that is the case I would suggest you do not ready any further. What Pastor Warren has created is not a book in which he uses his own opinion, but using scripture he offers to the reader what God wants us to do. He also explains to the reader in a step by step process what our life should be about and not what we want it to be about.
When I read the introduction to the book, I immediately knew that this book was going to be different. Different because the book is not designed to be read in one sitting. Instead there are 40 short chapters that are meant to be read one day at a time. At the end of each chapter there is a question that is meant to challenge the reader and the reader is expected to reflect on what they have read for one day. I found this to be the hardest part for me. I have the type of personality that wants to read everything as fast as possible to ‘get to the point.’
But I felt that the message Pastor Warren had to deliver was important enough, that I did as asked, taking one chapter a day. I would recommend you follow the daily plan as well to get the most out of the book. I also believe that this is not a ‘read once’ type of book that you set on the book shelf and forget. Instead I see it as a spiritual handbook that one should re-read in order to continue to benefit from the content.
If you have ever asked yourself the question ‘ why am I here’ or ‘what is my purpose in life’, I would highly recommend you read Pastor Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life. I personally believe you will not be disappointed and you will find the answer to the questions above.
